Cultivate’s Origin Story
In 2009, our Founder and CEO, Steve Garguilo, made a career move from a small 7-person company to a role at Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s largest companies. Surrounded by 140,000 new co-workers, he developed a deep fascination for understanding how ideas took shape and positive change emerged within such a vast organization.
He began cultivating a grassroots community that quickly grew to include thousands of like-minded individuals, ultimately building a department, within the Enterprise Center for Talent Development, called Creative Engagement at J&J. This group focused on empowering the workforce, helping to enable a renaissance period of growth and innovation for the company.
Steve hypothesized that J&J wasn’t the only company in the world that could benefit from a more empowered workforce. And so Cultivate was born — our company devoted to empowering human talent, researching what empowerment looks like at big companies, and growing the world’s largest community of Cultivators — those individuals that work to create positive change wherever they sit in an organization.
